About the exhibition:

Tale of 2 Cities is a group show that showcase the artworks of 3 artists from 2 countries namely – Chan Yan Ru (Taiwan), Choi Gap Lyeon(Korea) & Sung Hye Kyung(Korea). Their artworks have theme that reflect upon each artist’s background and mission to bring across a message to the viewer.

Yan Ru uses simplified pictorial elements to decode the relationships between the imaginary sceneries and the actual ones that he had stored in his memory from his childhood. In 2011, starting to combine my signature elements into traditional Taiwanese art as an attempt that not only paying attention to the visual composition but to explore and experiment a different form of painting. Through a rational scheme, I transform the personal feelings and emotions into systematic codes, popular yet delicate. I want to create “post-iconology paintings” that are easy, simple, but with deep meanings inside.

Gap Lyeon uses the topic on Quilt, traditional cloth gifts wrap and embroidery shoes with a natural and serene environment. It is a reflection of her presence with traditional value that was impart by her culture but set in a modern environment.

Hye Kyung explore on the topic that is more immediate that is the global environment that affect not only human but especially to animals such as lamas, panda and seal. One of her artwork showing a lamas wearing a human t-shirt with slipper looking lost and fearful of what is going to happen to “him”

About the exhibition:

“Milieu” is a collective show that puts together the artworks of 4 emerging art practitioners – Loi Cai Xiang, Nyein Su, Jerry Yeo Fu Ren & Melvin Wong Yan Han. Their artworks are the fruitful product, or by-product, of their conscious findings, discovery and critical reflection of their environment, life and art practices.

The context surrounding their immediate environment is conducive to the manner in which they think, understand and cognize the nature of their existence. The people they meet and the events that take place in their life, shape the reality of their environment and in turn, these settings alter and modify their ideals, priorities and aesthetics.

  Artist’s statement:

Loi Cai Xiang 9PM Boots by the door, 1AM Cup with the Display Shelf, 8AM Sofa with a cup, 60 X 60 cm Oil on Canvas 2013

Loi Cai Xiang – his series of works is his endeavor to record and contemplate the ordinaries. Mundane objects (sink, sofa etc.) in prosaic settings take centrality in his composition. Through the passage of time, these entities he became familiar with possess attributes that mark events and memories of his experiences. This effort to reminisce is an attempt to reconcile with his existential self. Recurring visuals that subtly shaped his routine, and successively given themselves shapes, became an important element in this pursuit. This tendency is manifested in the form of oil painting and can be seen as a rumination of his subsistence through means of realism.

Nyein Su Before the storm, Just a moment, I am ready, Waiting for 120 x 60 cm Oil and acrylic on canvas 2013

Nyein Su – her artworks deal with the current and past political concerns of her country (Burma). She was brought up in the country controlled by military government. She express her feelings and views on how they manipulate politics and orchestrate the awareness and beliefs of the Burmese and child soldiers. It confines them within a narrowed and hermetic perspective of the outside world, which eventually resulted in a less informed and uninitiated civilian, who only learn truth within Myanmar’s tight media control. This is succinctly reflected in a brief thought she had after she came to Singapore:

“We, the Burmese, may still be in delusion. We may be dreaming and at times, confused; but we’re still fighting, and definitely surviving!”

Jerry Yeo Fu Ren Dead or Alive - series of 7 Woodcarving 2013-r

Jerry Yeo Fu Ren – skateboard used to be an object that he played with everyday; ever since he suffered a great fall he eventually stopped skating. Even with his phobia of falling down again there is always this urge of excitement in him whenever he see people skating by. This goes the same for his subject matters in his work where he apply themes of uncanny and death. When he was a little kid he used to watch lots of fantasy cartoon and horror movies, even though he was afraid of it but there is still held this thrill in him that makes him always want to watch them. This explains his reason of using the skateboard as a canvas for me in this series, he feel the familiarity with the object. He try to implement his thoughts through his visual world. The visual world he create can appear cruel, pessimistic, fantasy and insane, but for him it’s another way of trying to express himself. Sometimes it is easier for him to express himself through the virtual world and to feel that there is another world out here, another language, where all his emotions can be expressed.

Melvin Wong Bushly Series 30 x 30cm Digital Print with different variant 2013

Melvin Wong Yan Han – Most new animal species are believed to arise when a single species splits into two. But new animals can also be created when two species come together to create a single new species, the researchers say. Hyrbid is offspring resulting from the mating of two distinctly homozygous individuals. Inspired from such facts, he has created his own hybrid involving insects as they live among us all the time. He specifically chose certain insects to create a hybrid in relation to his own experience at home and the public. Mothle is a mix breed of a moth and a beetle which can be commonly found at home while Bushly is a pest hybrid which are commonly seen in public places such as coffee shops.

Loi Cai Xiang

Born in 1992 in Singapore, Loi Cai Xiang is an art practitioner who is currently serving his diploma in western painting at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Loi Cai Xiang enjoys painting, and many of his works drew inspiration from his experiences and reflections. He seeks to explore the many metaphorical representations. These explorations allow him to constantly refine his visual and conceptual vocabulary. In 2011, Loi Cai Xiang had also taken part and came in 3rd for Asia Capital Reinsurance (ACR) Painting Award held in NAFA.

 Artist’s Statement

This series of paintings can be seen as an endeavor to record and contemplate the ordinaries. Mundane objects in prosaic settings take central in my composition. Through the passage of time, these entities I became familiar with possess attributes that mark events and memories of my experiences. This effort to reminisce is an attempt to reconcile with my existential self. Recurring visuals that subtly shaped my routine, and successively given themselves shapes, became an important element in this pursuit. This tendency is manifested in the form of oil painting and can be seen as a rumination of my subsistence through means of realism.

 This Girl

Nyein Su

Born in 1981. Su Myat Mon@ Nyein Su is fresh graduated in fine arts, western painting major at Nafa. She graduated B.C.Sc of Yangon, University of Computer Science in 2003.  Artist’s Statement

My artworks or “This Girl” series is based on critical view of civil war and politic of my native country (Burma).  I choose to paint myself with military equipment. I was brought up at a time where politics and civil wars were happening here and there in our country, as the consequence we were suffer fears and anxieties. I express my feelings and views on how they manipulate politics, control our country people and child soldier. My choice for pure colors is stimulated from the societal preference for artificial beauty arises from the relentless destruction of natural resources.  My figure has been left incomplete and some parts of figure are blend with background. As it is, nothing is finish and perfect artistically.

DARSHINI PRASATHAN Decoding Beauty – Ethereal III 83 x 58 cm Oil on Belgian Linen 2012

Darshini Prasathan

Darshini Prasathan is a Singapore-born artist whose current practice deals primarily with her relish for portraits. The artist paints to appreciate the beauty of life and finds the process of documenting her subjects through painting rather therapeutic. Often debriefs ethereal emotions and probe subject matters of interest forms various aspects of culture and people around her.  Her works does not merely deal with the physical appearance, but also the paradoxical, with what cannot be readily seen. She believes that an excellent portraitist is one who not only depicts the formal elements, but also, the sensation, the soul of another.

 Artist’s Statement

Beauty is closely related to culture. In most cultures darker skin appears to be subordinate in comparison with lighter skin. Despite beauty being perpetual, the norm of colour labelling based on aesthetical value has yet to change, and this is often denied or rather not discussed due to its delicacy. ‘Ethereal’ attempts to challenge this norm of colour labelling. The aim of this series is not to make a statement but rather to instigate the audience to ponder about the prohibitive value of colour in aesthetics appreciation that is rarely broached.

Yeo Siak Goon Golden Beach 72 x 90cm Acrylic on Canvas 2012

  Artist’s Statement:

Siak Goon’s love for nature and his fascination with tropical islands has defined his style. The gentle nude figures of his painting sit serene in sunlight and shadow, half hidden, and half revealed by a play of colours over form. Set in his favoured littoral environment, Siak Goon’s models live out their languid days amidst luxuriant vegetation, traditional beachfront architecture, azure skies, and turquoise seas. The nudes sit just so amidst a littoral landscape alive with the grit of wet sand, the smell of salt breeze, the taste of seaweed and the roar of the surf. With his visual elements arranged with exquisite poise, the architect of the paintings frames his curvaceous subjects with the linear architecture of Malay village huts. Siak Goon backgrounds the islands and coconut trees with the domesticity of pet cats, tables and chairs in the foreground; accentuated by light and shadows in colours warm and cool, playing with the tangible form amidst negative space. The bareness of his models also allows them to be one with nature, melting seamlessly into the surroundings. Occasionally the artist places his form as a discreet observer into the painting, into the very art and environment that he is so passionate about.

The creations were played by ear in the beginning, as Yu-Wei is a lover of order and it was soon taken by the number of the date to be the element, historical events, birth and death of important people, etc. The last week of December 2011, as done as a test for himself to draw one mandala a day, a continuous 366 days project “MY Corp Cycles Mandala 2012” came to his mind and here is the “blessing for you and this world”.
